The mission of the volunteer program is to enhance city services
and programs by matching the varied talents of concerned
individuals and groups of all ages, interests and skills, with a
variety of interesting and challenging projects and endeavors.
Volunteers assist with nearly every aspect of our city's
government. Whether a volunteer is involved in an ongoing position
or a single event, volunteer daily, weekly or monthly, the City of
Rio Rancho appreciates the support. Volunteering for the city is
one of the best examples of government and citizens working
together for the good of the community. Volunteers get an insider's
look at how our local government works, and an opportunity to share
talents and skills. Many volunteers are in a position to see
firsthand where changes are needed and give productive critique on
how to better serve our customers. Volunteers may also gain new
skills, friends and a sense of accomplishment through volunteering.
Volunteers play an important role in how things get done in our
society. Many services would not happen without the services of
volunteers. We consider our volunteers as one of the most diverse
and richest resources in our community. Volunteers make a huge
difference in peoples' lives; we are happy to have you join us.
Staff will be available to offer support, motivation, and
encouragement as well as champion new ideas that propose
improvement to our current volunteer structure. What is a
Volunteer? Very generally - a volunteer is someone who performs
activities intended to help others and/or improve themselves.
Volunteering is not done for monetary compensation or material gain
and is not based on obligation. Volunteering is the act of giving
or donating one's time and skills. Understanding a person's
motivation for volunteering is key to placing him/her in the right
volunteer position. Listed are some of the needs that stimulate
people through volunteering:

Your motivation for volunteering for the city of Rio Rancho
might be different, but the end result is the same, you make a
positive impact on others. YOU ARE PROVIDING A MUCH NEEDED SERVICE
TO YOUR COMMUNITY The development of volunteer programs has
substantially increased the opportunity for individuals to use
their time and skills for the betterment of themselves and others.
Many programs may not be in existence today if not for volunteers.
Volunteers also can:
* Act as liaisons with our community to gain support of programs
* Provide a direct line to private resources in our community *
Facilitate networking * Increase public awareness and program
The Volunteer Chaplain position with the Police Department
The purpose of the Department Chaplaincy Program is to provide a
more sensitive response to the public in times of crisis and to
provide the Department and its MOS with any personal assistance.
The Police Chaplains will be available on a 24-hour basis. In the
interest of assisting the public and the members of the Department,
the Chief of Police may authorize Police Chaplains to assist other
departments and agencies.
The Chaplaincy serves the community and MOS in times of
emergencies, traumatic events, public periods of mourning and
commemoration, and it serves to strengthen and enhance the services
which the Department provides to the community. The Chaplaincy will
be available on-call to provide assistance for human relation
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Chaplains are to attend monthly training. These training
sessions will be used to exchange information about upcoming
activities, training, or fellowship.
2. Chaplains should strive to participate in Department
operations and functions. Chaplains should:
a. Respond to spiritual, pastoral, or counseling requests of
Department MOS and their families.
b. Assist Department officials with providing death or serious
c. Respond to hospitals when incidents of on-duty serious injury
or death of MOS occur and perform duties as appropriate.
d. Visit sick or injured MOS.
e. Participate in funeral or memorial services for active or
retired MOS, and assist their family members in preparation of
f. Respond to the Incident Command Post on the occasion of a
major incident or disaster.
g. Participate in stress reduction programs and peer support
h. Attend departmental promotion functions, award ceremonies,
dinners, social events, graduation ceremonies, and offer invocation
i. Perform other services that may be required by the Chief of
Police or designee.
1. To ensure integrity and conformance with national standards,
all applicants for the Chaplaincy Program must:
a. Complete volunteer application with Human Resources,
b. Be an ordained or licensed member of a recognized faith
community in Rio Rancho or the greater metropolitan area,
c. Never have been convicted of a felony crime,
d. Possess a valid New Mexico Driver's License,
e. Complete an interview with the Department Chaplain Steering
f. Be recommended for service by the Steering Committee,
g. Pass a background investigation, and
h. Be authorized by the Chief of Police for service.
