VOLUNTEERS DO NOT NEED TO COMPLETE THE EMPLOYMENT HISTORY ON THE APPLICATION FORM!Volunteer ProgramMission The mission of the volunteer program is to enhance city services and programs by matching the varied talents of concerned individuals and groups of all ages, interests and skills, with a variety of interesting and challenging projects and endeavors.Volunteers assist with nearly every aspect of our city's government. Whether a volunteer is involved in an ongoing position or a single event, volunteer daily, weekly or monthly, the city of Rio Rancho appreciates the support.Volunteering for the city is one of the best examples of government and citizens working together for the good of the community. Volunteers get an insider's look at how our local government works, and an opportunity to share talents and skills. Many volunteers are in a position to see firsthand where changes are needed and give productive critique on how to better serve our customers. Volunteers may also gain new skills, friends and a sense of accomplishment through volunteering.Volunteers play an important role in how things get done in our society. Many services would not happen without the services of volunteers. We consider our volunteers as one of the most diverse and richest resources in our community. Volunteers make a huge difference in peoples' lives; we are happy to have you join us.Staff will be available to offer support, motivation, and encouragement as well as champion new ideas that propose improvement to our current volunteer structure.What is a Volunteer? Very generally - a volunteer is someone who performs activities intended to help others and/or improve themselves. Volunteering is not done for monetary compensation or material gain and is not based on obligation. Volunteering is the act of giving or donating one's time and skills.Understanding a person's motivation for volunteering is key to placing him/her in the right volunteer position. Many programs may not be in existence today if not for volunteers.Volunteers also can:* Act as liaisons with our community to gain support of programs* Provide a direct line to private resources in our community* Facilitate networking* Increase public awareness and program visibilityRio Rancho Public Library Volunteer ProgramVolunteering is important to our Rio Rancho community and is an excellent opportunity for individuals to lend their time and talents to give back to others.The Rio Rancho Public Libraries accept adult and teenaged volunteers. Please read on for more information regarding the tasks and requirements. Go to www., and click on "Employment" to submit an on-line volunteer application.Adult Greeter Program* Seated near the front desk (Customer Service) at the Loma Colorado Library.* Welcome patrons with a smile and a warm greeting and assist them with simple questions and directions.* Assist patrons with filling out library card applications.* Perform tasks such as cleaning books or cutting scrap paper when not assisting patrons.* Work shifts are two hours in length, at least one day a week, and are between the hours of 10a.m. and 5p.m., Monday through Saturday.Adult Volunteer ProgramDuties:* Report to the Volunteer Coordinator at Loma Colorado and Esther Bone branches and/or the Circulation Department manager.* Look through library items returned through the book drop bins and check for damage, missing media or book accompaniments, and anything left behind that does not belong to the library.* Run returned items through the automatic sorter which checks in library materials.* Empty items from the sorter's bins and place on the proper shelves in the book drop.* Prepare book carts to be shelved by placing items on the cart in order alphabetically or numerically, and then signing them in and parking them in the "cart corral."* Occasionally shelving books and/or media by placing them in order on the shelves in the library.* Duties may include shredding paper, cleaning books, dusting shelves, cutting up scrap paper, and other tasks as needed.* Exchange bins from the sorter return located at the Circulation Desk; bring the full bin back to the Book Drop and look through the checked in items for damage, etc. Place the looked through items on the proper shelves in the Book Drop.Qualifications:Must be proficient in organizing books and media both alphabetically and numerically. Must be able to devote at least 2 1/2 hours one day a week to volunteer work at the library. Must have a good attitude and pleasant personality.Physical Demands:Must be capable of standing, bending, and reaching above your head. Must be able to lift stacks of heavy books. Must be able to push empty and fully loaded book carts for short distances.Dress: Clean, neat clothes, No midriff or cleavage-exposing tops, no mini shorts, skirts, or dresses, Comfortable, low-heeled shoes.Teen Volunteers: Report to the Teen Librarian.Duties: Assist the librarian with teen programs and library duties as needed (may include such things as sharpening pencils and cutting up scrap paper).
