Summary

This position will support the Federal Government's response efforts to COVID-19.

This position is located at one of the various Indian Health Service Hospitals or Clinics under the Navajo Area Office. The primary purpose is to provide technical expertise in emergency medical care and specialized trauma in outpatient and emergency room settings in hospitals operating on a 24-7 days per week schedule.

Responsibilities

This position will support efforts related to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

  • Provides emergency care on a regular and ongoing basis to patients seen in the emergency room
  • Makes appropriate referrals and obtains appropriate consultations after primary evaluation and documentation has been completed
  • Recognizes and gives initial treatment of acute psychiatric problems
  • Provides emergency medicine expertise and consultation in emergency medicine to providers at the facility/ies
  • Serves as a committee member of the ER Committee, the Medical Staff Committee, the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and on other committees
  • Participates in the performance improvement program on a continuous basis and performs other duties as assigned

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. The investigation must find that you are suitable for Federal employment in your position. If you are found not suitable, you will be terminated after you begin work. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Education: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional Requirements for Grades GS-12 and Above

GS 13: 3 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training

GS 14: 4 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training

GS 15: 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

GS-13:Independently applied emergency medicine professional knowledge of theories and practices of medicine, of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology and pharmacology to diagnose and treat a wide range of direct patient care services in compliance with medical staff by-laws, professional standards and codes, guidelines, policy statements, rules and regulations.

GS-14:Independently applied emergency medicine professional knowledge of theories and practices of medicine, of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology and pharmacology to diagnose, makes preliminary diagnoses, directs and provides treatment and follow-up of patients with suspected illnesses, rare conditions and/or complex diagnosis in compliance with medical staff by-laws, professional standards and codes, guidelines, policy statements, rules and regulations; served as an expert in medical evaluation.

GS-15: Serves as an expert in the specialized area, with experience that included a high degree of judgment and leadership in coordinating emergency services; independently planned, organized and carried out assignments during course of patient care; providing definitive management of emergency care, recommended or implemented changes to improve the quality of Emergency Room services and working in compliance with policies, procedures and practices relating to health care delivery, etc.

  • Board Certification, not required but preferred.
